As the Community Council is able to understand the local issues due to its involvement in the Shuswap community, one of the major responsibilities of the CC is to assist the BCSPCA's main office (where general governance is maintained) by making recommendations and voicing priorities that are applicable for the Shuswap Branch. The CC meets approximately once a month and its concerns are relayed to the main office through its liaison, the Community Council Chair.
The CC's responsibilities also include helping the Shuswap shelter by raising public awareness through public relations, membership, volunteer, fundraising, and humane education programs, many of which are developed and organized by the CC members. It may also aid the shelter with animal fostering and adoptions if requested or needed - often through the pet squad program, whereby adoptable animals are taken to public areas for viewing outside the shelter (cats you see at a shopping mall or SPCA dogs out walking downtown, are two such examples).
The Community Council is elected annually by the Shuswap Branch members, and is a vital part of the shelter's volunteer network.
